In the vastly overrated 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, author Peter Biskind puts at fault for Hollywood's blockbuster mentality no less than partially on Steven Spielberg's box-office success with this particular adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestselling novel. But you cannot blame Spielberg for building a terrific movie, which Jaws definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist customers are suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley's book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequences of action and suspense supported by the trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who proposes to hunt the shark down). The sequences on Shaw's boat--as the 3 ones understand that in fact the shark is hunting them--are what entertaining moviemaking is about. --Marshall Fine

Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, Jaws set the typical for edge-of-your-seat suspense quickly being a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the film industry. When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town’s chief of police (Roy Scheider), a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) plus a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) set about a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. Featuring an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, Jaws remains one in the most influential and gripping adventures moving picture history.
